What Is a Bunion?
A bunion — medically known as hallux valgus — is a bony prominence that forms at the base of the big toe when the joint is pushed out of alignment. As the big toe drifts toward the second toe, the metatarsophalangeal joint protrudes outward, creating the characteristic bump on the inside of the foot.
Bunions develop gradually. In the early stages, they may cause only mild discomfort and redness. Over time, the deformity worsens and the joint becomes increasingly painful, inflamed, and stiff. The skin over the bump can become thick and calloused from shoe pressure, and in more advanced cases, the big toe may overlap or crowd the smaller toes — leading to additional deformities like hammertoes.
Bunions are primarily caused by an inherited foot structure that creates abnormal mechanical stress on the big toe joint. Narrow, pointed, or high-heeled footwear does not cause bunions — but it can accelerate their progression and increase pain.
Bunions do not resolve on their own. Without treatment, the deformity worsens over time. However, the right conservative care can significantly reduce pain and slow progression — and for severe cases, surgical correction can permanently realign the joint and restore function.
Who Is at Risk?
Those with a Family History
Bunions are largely hereditary. If one or both parents have bunions, you are significantly more likely to develop them due to inherited foot structure.
Women
Women are diagnosed with bunions at a far higher rate than men — partly due to footwear choices and partly due to foot structure differences that increase joint stress.
People with Flat Feet or Loose Joints
Flat arches and hypermobile joints cause abnormal load distribution across the forefoot, increasing the risk of bunion formation over time.
Older Adults
Decades of mechanical stress accumulate over time. Bunions are most common in adults over 60, though they can begin forming much earlier.
Conservative Care First
Dr. Burdge always starts with the least invasive approach. Many patients find lasting relief from custom orthotics, padding, and footwear changes alone.
Slows Progression
Early treatment does not just relieve pain — it slows the worsening of the deformity, which can delay or prevent the need for surgery altogether.
Surgical Expertise
When surgery is necessary, Dr. Burdge performs bunionectomy procedures at Methodist West and Memorial Hermann — leading facilities in the Katy area.
Treats Related Conditions
Bunions often occur alongside hammertoes, bursitis, and metatarsalgia. Dr. Burdge addresses all contributing conditions in a single coordinated plan.
When Is Bunion Surgery Needed?
Surgery is recommended when a bunion causes persistent pain that interferes with daily activities, when conservative treatments have failed to provide adequate relief, or when the deformity has progressed to the point of significantly limiting mobility or causing secondary problems like hammertoes.
The most common procedure is a bunionectomy — the surgical removal of the bony prominence combined with realignment of the bones, tendons, and ligaments of the big toe joint. The specific technique depends on the severity and structure of the deformity.
Dr. Burdge is a board-certified podiatric surgeon with more than 28 years of experience performing foot and ankle procedures. Bunion surgery is performed at Methodist West Hospital, Memorial Hermann Katy Hospital, or Memorial Hermann Surgery Center, Kingsland — and is followed by a structured recovery and rehabilitation plan.
Your Treatment Journey
From your first evaluation to walking comfortably again — here’s how we approach bunion care at Advanced Ankle & Foot.
Evaluation & X-Rays
Dr. Burdge examines the bunion, assesses severity, and takes X-rays to evaluate the degree of joint deformity and bone alignment.
Conservative Treatment Plan
A personalized plan using orthotics, padding, footwear guidance, and anti-inflammatory options is built to relieve pain and slow progression.
Surgical Consultation (If Needed)
If conservative care is insufficient, Dr. Burdge discusses surgical options, explains the procedure, and answers every question before any decision is made.
Recovery & Follow-Up
Whether surgical or conservative, Dr. Burdge monitors your progress and adjusts your plan to ensure long-term comfort and function.
Personalized Treatment Plans for Every Patient
Dr. Burdge evaluates the stage of your bunion, your pain level, activity demands, and overall health to recommend the most appropriate treatment — conservative, surgical, or a combination of both.
Custom Orthotics
Prescription orthotics redistribute pressure away from the bunion joint, correct abnormal foot mechanics, and slow the progression of the deformity.
- Reduces pain during walking and standing
- Corrects overpronation and flat feet
- Slows progression of the deformity
- Often the first-line treatment for mild bunions
Padding & Taping
Protective padding placed over the bunion reduces friction and pressure from footwear. Taping can temporarily realign the toe to reduce pain during activity.
- Immediate pressure relief
- Reduces redness and skin irritation
- Non-invasive and easy to use
- Useful as part of a broader treatment plan
Footwear Modifications
Switching to shoes with a wider toe box, lower heels, and better arch support can significantly reduce bunion pain and slow the progression of the deformity.
- Reduces pressure on the joint
- Minimizes friction and irritation
- Practical, low-cost intervention
- Dr. Burdge provides specific guidance
Anti-Inflammatory Therapy
For bunions with significant inflammation and pain flare-ups, anti-inflammatory medications or cortisone injections can provide meaningful short-term relief.
- Reduces joint inflammation
- Relieves acute pain episodes
- Used alongside other treatments
- Monitored carefully for safety
Bunionectomy (Surgical Correction)
When conservative care fails, Dr. Burdge performs bunionectomy surgery to remove the bony prominence and realign the joint — permanently correcting the deformity.
- Permanent structural correction
- Performed at leading Katy hospitals
- Only recommended when necessary
- Full pre- and post-op support provided
Hammertoe & Related Condition Care
Bunions frequently cause secondary deformities. Dr. Burdge treats associated hammertoes, bursitis, corns, and calluses as part of a comprehensive care plan.
- Addresses all related deformities
- Prevents additional complications
- Conservative and surgical options
- Single coordinated treatment plan
