What Is Achilles Tendinitis?

Achilles tendinitis is inflammation of the Achilles tendon — the large band of tissue that connects the calf muscles to the heel bone. It is one of the most common overuse injuries affecting the foot and ankle.

The condition typically causes pain and stiffness along the back of the leg near the heel, especially in the morning or after periods of rest. It can also cause swelling and tenderness to the touch. In some cases, a painful bump may develop on the tendon itself.

There are two main types: non-insertional Achilles tendinitis, where the middle portion of the tendon is affected, and insertional Achilles tendinitis, where the lower end of the tendon where it attaches to the heel bone is involved.

Left untreated, Achilles tendinitis can progress to tendon degeneration or even rupture — a far more serious injury requiring surgical repair and months of recovery. Early intervention is critical.

Who Is at Risk?

Runners & Athletes

Sudden increases in training intensity or mileage are the most common triggers. Runners, basketball players, and tennis players are especially prone.

Weekend Warriors

People who are sedentary during the week and very active on weekends place sudden stress on tendons that haven’t been conditioned to handle it.

Older Adults

The Achilles tendon weakens with age. Adults over 40 are at significantly higher risk for both tendinitis and tendon rupture.

Those with Flat Feet or Tight Calves

Flat arches and poor flexibility in the calf muscles increase the load on the Achilles tendon, making injury more likely over time.

Non-Invasive First

Dr. Burdge always explores conservative options first. Most patients recover fully without surgery or injections.

Rapid Recovery

Our treatment plans are designed to get you moving again quickly — with most patients returning to activity within weeks, not months.

Prevent Rupture

Untreated tendinitis can lead to tendon rupture. Early, proper care significantly reduces this serious risk.

Sports Medicine Expertise

Dr. Burdge trained alongside sports medicine physicians who treated professional athletes. He brings that expertise to every patient.

EPAT Shockwave Therapy for Achilles Tendinitis

For patients who haven’t responded to rest, stretching, or orthotics, EPAT (Extracorporeal Pulse Activation Treatment) is a highly effective next step. It is FDA-cleared and clinically proven for treating Achilles tendinitis without surgery.

Using a handheld applicator, Dr. Burdge delivers acoustic pressure waves directly to the affected area of the tendon. These waves stimulate blood flow, promote cellular regeneration, and accelerate the body’s natural repair process — targeting the root cause of the pain rather than just masking it.

Treatment consists of approximately 3 sessions over 3 weeks, each lasting around 15 minutes. Most patients experience noticeable improvement within 6 to 8 weeks. Over 80% report significant pain reduction.

From your first visit to getting back to full activity — here’s how we guide you through the process.

3

In-Office Treatment
